For many people, red, sore gums are an everyday occurrence when brushing and/or flossing and something that is passed off as insignificant. Not so!
To put it bluntly, if your gums are red, sore, swollen or bleeding it could be indicative of a much more serious issue than you may think…up to and including gum disease.
While not every case is cause for concern, there are several reasons your gums may be in pain and even bleed from time to time. Keep reading to learn more about this and when you should get to the dentist.
What causes gum issues?
Our gums play a key role in the health of our mouths. They surround our teeth to provide a protective seal, also bind tightly to underlying bone, helping resist food friction that passes over them.
Healthy gums appear a light pink shade and are tight on the teeth. Signs that your gum health isn’t up to par include a red color, a “rolled” appearance against the teeth, a swollen feel or appearance, pain, and blood when brushing or flossing your teeth.
At minimum, gum issues can be due to brushing with too much force. Other reasons include more serious issues, like mouth ulcers, malnutrition, infection, hormonal changes, teeth that are misaligned and gum disease.
A great solution is prevention! Keeping healthy gums includes, of course, flossing daily and brushing twice a day, but also consuming an adequate water intake, eating nutritiously and receiving your dental exam twice annually.
