For some, bad breath can be more frequent than simply after eating pungent foods. It can be a regular occurrence and can be frustrating and embarrassing. And in some instances, mints and gum do not help and only mask the issue.
If you are concerned about breath that is less than fresh, read on for what you can do.
Factors that contribute to bad breath
Chances are, we all have had bad breath at some point. Such as in the morning before brushing teeth or after eating foods like garlic or onions. But for some, chronic bad breath is very real. This condition is called halitosis.
Halitosis is a strong mouth smell and can be a sign of more serious issues like diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease or acid reflux. Other dental issues such as gum disease and cavities can also contribute to halitosis, along with dry mouth and throat, nose and mouth infections.
It is key for everyone — even those who do not have halitosis — to maintain good oral health habits. Brushing twice a day and flossing daily go a long way in maintaining a healthy, fresh mouth. It is also imperative to visit your dentist every six months for your professional dental cleaning and exam. This allows for complete cleaning of teeth and gums in hard-to-reach areas that can harbor bacteria.
For those with severe bad breath, an antibacterial mouthwash and tongue scraper can offer additional help to freshen breath, as well as changing your toothbrush frequently. Drinking adequate amounts of water, eating fruits and vegetables and chewing sugar free gum may also help. And, as it should go without saying, stopping smoking and tobacco products is paramount for freshening breath.
