A toothache can be a relatively common issue that most people experience at some point. Most of the time, it is simply a minor ache in the tooth or gums. Other times, though, the pain can be severe. In either case, a toothache could be telling you something about more serious dental issues and should be addressed properly.
What causes a toothache?
While every situation may be different, there are some relatively common causes of toothaches.
First, a toothache can signal that tooth decay is happening. Tooth decay is a condition that develops due to dental hygiene that is not up to par as well as an abundance of sugar-filled foods or drinks which wear tooth enamel. Thus, tooth decay can result in cavities, which can cause a more severe ache.
A toothache can also be signaling that there are issues with fillings. Dental fillings can become damaged over time and can result in a toothache and/or infection. In this case, fillings should be repaired or replaced right away.
A cracked tooth could also be the culprit of a toothache, as can infected gums, bruxism (grinding of the teeth) or even an abscessed tooth. A cracked tooth can be the result of tooth decay or injury, while infected gums can also be due to decay. Bruxism over an extended period of time can wear away at tooth enamel and, in turn, cause pain. And an abscessed tooth can be caused by decay as well as periodontal disease and gum disease.
And finally, teeth that are misaligned or wisdom teeth that are impacted can also cause toothaches. Misaligned teeth can be fixed with orthodontic solutions while wisdom teeth that are failing to breakthrough the gums can be surgically removed.
In any case, if you are experiencing a lingering toothache, you should schedule a dental visit so that it can be properly diagnosed and treated sooner rather than later.
