Despite your best efforts to maintain optimum oral health, dental emergencies can and do occur. Though the best protection against unwanted dental woes is attending every six-month dental checkup and exam with Dr. Milan, if you are faced with an unexpected emergency, here are some tips.
What’s a dental emergency?
If you have any of the following, you should make a dentist appointment right away:
- Toothache
- A tooth that has come out
- A chipped tooth
However, you can take measures at home to help things in the near term with any of the above occurrences.
If your tooth or teeth have fallen out because of an injury, you should rinse them with water. Be sure not to use soap. If you can, and if the tooth is in its regular condition, try putting it back in the tooth socket, as studies indicate this can help to salvage it. If you are unable to do this, you should keep the tooth in a cup of your own saliva or milk up to and until you get to the dentist. And time is truly of the essence in this situation.
If you’ve chipped your tooth, contact Dr. Milan right away so that you can be treated before the risk of infection. In this case, do rinse your mouth out with water and hold cold compresses on areas of swelling. Bring any broken tooth pieces with you if this is an option.
If you are experiencing a painful toothache, rinse the mouth with warm water. Also, floss the area to remove any debris that could be enhancing pain. And if the pain continues, make an appointment with Dr. Milan as soon as possible for treatment.
Please note that there are occasions where your doctor, not your dentist, is who you need to see. These include heavy mouth bleeding, a broken jaw, dizziness from mouth trauma and mouth or facial swelling that is extremely painful.
