What Causes a Toothache? (And When to Head to the Dentist)

Though it may sound like a minor problem to have, a toothache can be painful and even indicative of a bigger issue. Though typically a toothache is not a cause for concern, sometimes it requires treatment at the dentist for a more serious dental issue.

Keep reading to learn more about when a toothache shouldn’t be ignored.

Causes of a toothache

While it is important to note that every situation is different, there are, however, several common reasons for toothaches to occur.

A toothache can often mean that tooth decay is on the horizon. Tooth decay develops when oral hygiene is insufficient — i.e., lack of proper brushing and flossing. Further, eating sugary foods and consuming sugar-filled beverages like soda and fruit juice, can also lead to tooth decay. When this decay turns into a cavity, a toothache can become more severe.

A toothache can also signal an issue with dental fillings. Fillings can sometimes become damaged over the years and thus, cause an achy tooth. When this happens, the filling should be seen by a dentist for repair or replacement.

Additionally, a cracked tooth can also be a reason for a toothache. No matter if caused by injury or decay, when a tooth is cracked it can lead to a toothache or even infected gums. Sometimes, bruxism—or grinding of the teeth—can cause a tooth to become cracked and enamel eroded, and, in turn, a toothache.

Another reason for a toothache is misaligned teeth or wisdom teeth that are beginning to break through. In the case of teeth that are not aligned properly, orthodontic solutions may be required.
