Trick or Treat! How to Indulge Without Harming Your Teeth

It’s that time of year when the ghosts and goblins come out and a plethora of candy is all around! Celebrating Halloween is fun for kids and adults alike – but when it comes to your teeth and overall oral health, chocolate, and sugary treats can truly be a buzzkill.

There are ways to enjoy Halloween snacks sensibly, though — for both yourself and your family.  Keep reading for more.

Be realistic

Like anything else, indulging within reason is vital. It can be easy to reach into the candy bowl and grab a handful of treats and eat it without even thinking twice. This kind of unconscious indulging can wreak havoc not only on your oral health but your overall health as well.

Limiting your family to one treat a day during the Halloween season sets reasonable limits. And if you find your home with a surplus of candy, you may consider keeping a bit of it and sharing the rest at work or with various organizations.

Alternative treats

It can also be fun to think up some other creative ways for you and your kids to enjoy the spooky season together. Kids may enjoy things like stickers, coloring books, and other gadgets rather than only candy. Sometimes it’s a sweet surprise to deviate from the norm.

You can also purchase sugar-free candies or get creative in the kitchen by baking delicious treats that are both tasty and nutritious. The important thing to realize is that there are options!

And don’t forget to brush!

If you are going to indulge, it is key to brush your teeth afterward as soon as possible to avoid cavities and tooth decay. Whether you’ve enjoyed one or multiple pieces of candy – brushing away sugar and debris as well as flossing to get stuck-on food off of your teeth and gums is essential to strong teeth.
