Tooth decay is a relatively common dental issue for both adults and children. However, tooth decay can lead to cavities, which is the hole that occurs in the tooth where decay has eroded enamel.
In the U.S., nearly 90 percent of adults from the ages of 20 to 64 have had tooth decay and 27 percent have had cavities that have gone untreated.
And nearly 37 percent of children ages two to 8 years old have had a cavity and adolescents and teens from 12 to 19 years of age have had cavities.
But how can you tell if a cavity is lurking? Read on to learn more.
Cavity detection
If you have any of the following signs or symptoms, it’s a good idea to see the dentist to check if a cavity is forming.
Tooth sensitivity can be a sign of a cavity – from mild to severe sensitivity. This can occur when eating or drinking hot or cold food or beverages, or even out of the blue.
Likewise, tooth pain while eating or drinking can also be a sign of a cavity. Sweet foods and beverages can cause discomfort or pain when a cavity is present or forming, along with hot or cold foods. But it’s important to note that you may have no pain at all when a cavity is present.
And one of the more obvious signs of a cavity is when pits or holes in the tooth are present. Small holes are generally indicative of decay that has exacerbated into a cavity, and you should make a dentist appointment right away.
