Think You Have a Cavity? Why You Shouldn’t Wait for Treatment

When it comes to maintaining your healthiest smile, your dental health is best handled proactively. As such, visiting your dentist at least every six months for a checkup and professional cleaning, annually for X-rays, and ensuring great at-home care are all essential.

It is also important to keep an eye out for any potential dental issues that may be lurking and have them treated sooner rather than later, including cavities.

Truth be told, most dental issues are not only preventable, but can also be more easily treated when you seek care right away rather than waiting until they become bigger, more problematic issues. This is most definitely the case with cavities.

Read on for more on this important topic.

What is a cavity?

Cavities occur when particles of food remain on your teeth for an extended period of time. This debris, particularly harmful if derived from sugary substances, breeds bacteria and harms tooth enamel. Once it has entered enamel, a cavity has started.

Symptoms of a cavity include a toothache or tooth sensitivity, swelling, and even no symptoms whatsoever.

If you have any of the above symptoms, you should visit Dr. Milan for an exam. Why? Because if you leave a cavity untreated, it can cause a litany of other, more painful and expensive issues.

The first treatment option for a cavity is to get a filling. This will prevent additional decay from developing on your tooth. This treatment is very common with little discomfort.

However, if you do not receive a filling in a timely manner, you run the risk of needing a root canal. This procedure can be painful and involves removing soft tissues and pulp from inside your tooth. It also costs more than a filling.

Even worse, if left untreated, a cavity can cause an abscess to begin. At that point, a root canal may not be able to treat the issue and your tooth may need to be removed. In this instance, the only treatment option left is a dental implant to replace the tooth.

Dr. Milan is always here for you, even in dental emergencies. Our advice is to take measures to prevent a cavity. However, if you feel you have one, do not hesitate to contact us for an appointment.
