When it comes to good oral health, it can be much more important than just a healthy, white smile.
In fact, some studies have linked oral health to other conditions and diseases. Alzheimer’s is one example. But just how are oral wellness and Alzheimer’s connected? Read on for more.
More than your smile
Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia that impacts memory and cognition. It can cause personality changes, as well.
But did you know that Alzheimer’s is more likely to occur in people whose gums and mouths are not up to par? The reason is inflammation.
A study by New York University College of Dentistry indicated that advanced gum disease can increase cognitive dysfunction linked to Alzheimer’s. And this is because gum disease causes inflammation in the mouth, which can even contribute to inflammation in the brain.
And while there is more to be studied, the link is enough reason to take your oral health even more seriously.
To help protect yourself, be sure you are brushing your teeth at least twice daily for two minutes each time. Further ensure you floss your teeth daily. And, of course, visit the dentist twice a year for your dental exam and cleaning.
