How to tell if You’re Brushing Your Teeth Properly

Most people don’t think too much about how they brush their teeth…they simply do it.

And while it’s good that teeth brushing is a habit, there are some best practices that we all should be reminded of from time to time.

There are some key indicators that you may not be brushing satisfactorily and ways you can be sure your teeth brushing is up to par. Read on for more.

Teeth brushing: some reminders

Despite brushing your teeth twice a day, you may still encounter dental issues. Sometimes people don’t even realize there are right and wrong way to brush!

Some signs that you may be brushing improperly include:

  • Bad breath
  • A white coating on the tongue
  • Bleeding gums
  • Food getting stuck between teeth
  • Receding gums
  • Sensitivity
  • Weak or gritty teeth

However, the good news is you can turn things around fast!

The ADA recommends brushing teeth twice daily for two minutes each time. You should also choose a soft-bristled brush that is not too large for your mouth. And make sure you are getting a new toothbrush at least every three months.

Some electric toothbrushes have timers to ensure you are brushing for the full two minutes, as it is longer than you may think.

Use a gentle hand and be sure to cover all surfaces of the teeth in a circular motion rather than up and down or back and forth. And store your brush upright in a holder away from other toothbrushes to allow for air flow.

Be sure to use a fluoride toothpaste and don’t forget about flossing! Adding in an ADA-approved mouth rinse is another bonus!
