You more than likely have heard of or know what fluoride is. If not, fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally, and it helps to prevent cavities from occurring while also strengthening the teeth.
It is, in many places in the U.S., added to the water and is deemed safe for consuming within the appropriate amount
However, there are some myths out there about fluoride. We clear things up below.
Fluoride—myths and facts
An internet search, as with many things, can showcase some incorrect information about fluoride.
One such myth is that consuming fluoride can cause fluorosis. This is a myth. What is true, is that fluorosis can occur when someone consumes an incredibly large amount of fluoride, which is very unlikely.
Another myth is that fluoride is dangerous for kids. In fact, fluoride is not considered dangerous when used properly. It can actually help to strengthen growing teeth and stop tooth decay.
An additional myth is that it is costly to fluoridate water in communities. In actuality, it is a less costly way to help lessen the chances of tooth decay – cheaper than the procedures to treat it.
And finally, there is a myth out there that says fluoride can cause cancer. There are studies that show that fluoride does not cause cancer or other health issues and is considered safe by the American Academy of Family Physicians.
