Interesting things about your tongue

First and foremost, your tongue is key to your oral health and can contribute to health issues and bad breath if not properly cared for. It is surfaced with little bumps called papillae. These can keep bacteria trapped and, in turn, be a cause of halitosis (chronic bad breath). As such, brushing your tongue with your toothbrush or even a tongue brush or scraper can help to better remove bacteria than only brushing teeth. You may even consider an ADA-approved mouthwash that is antibacterial.

Next, the tongue can help indicate a person’s health. When doctors ask to look at your tongue, they may be looking for clues on health. A tongue that is yellow in color could indicate a stomach issue or a fever. A white appearance can mean yeast or candida are present or another fungal type of infection.

Further, your tongue helps you to taste. In fact, it has receptors on it that put out chemical reactions when you consume beverages and food. And one tastebud contains up to 150 of these!
