Many people are aware that seeing their dentist twice a year for a checkup and cleaning is essential to maintaining good oral health. But did you know that a huge part of ensuring your teeth and gums are healthy begins at home?
It’s true. How you care for your mouth when you’re not at the dentist makes a significant impact on whether your mouth stays in its best shape or not.
Read on for more.
Healthy habits at home
While it is key to brush your teeth twice daily at a minimum, you can always brush more often! You should take care to brush for two minutes (set a timer…it could be longer than you think!) with a soft-bristled brush. Brush in circles, and be sure to reach your back teeth.
You should also be flossing daily. This ensures that food and debris are removed from hard-to-reach spaces between the teeth so that buildup doesn’t turn into cavities. And it helps keep breath fresh, as does rinsing with a fluoride mouthwash.
Drinking adequate amounts of water throughout the day is also key to keeping teeth healthy, as is a nutritious diet full of vegetables.
And, always, it is your job to be aware of any unusual issues with teeth and gums. If something seems off or if you are experiencing pain in the mouth, contact us right away.
