Causes of (and Solutions for) Bad Breath

Bad breath can be a very frustrating condition that can affect your self-confidence and your personal life.

It’s estimated that 35-45 percent of people worldwide have bad breath (or halitosis, medically speaking). It’s estimated that over 80 million people in the U.S. suffer with chronic halitosis. However, most people have had bad breath at some time; whether first thing in the morning or after eating meals with strong ingredients like garlic and onion.

But, rest assured, there are steps you can take to ensure your breath is its freshest. Keep reading to learn more.

The culprits and what you can do

For many people, bad breath is a result of poor dental hygiene, such as infrequent brushing and flossing or missing dental cleanings. Further, certain foods and lifestyle habits can worsen bad breath, such as eating pungent foods or using tobacco products. Also, some medications can contribute to bad breath.

But sometimes, bad breath can be caused by underlying medical conditions. For instance, gum disease is a common cause of bad breath. Other non-oral conditions like yeast infections in the mouth, dry mouth and even bronchitis, diabetes, acid reflux and kidney and liver issues can also be the culprit of bad breath.

Mints and gum can only help so much and are temporary fixes. To ensure fresh breath, it’s important to brush twice a day and floss daily, as well as to clean dentures properly if you wear them. Antibacterial mouth wash can also be helpful in killing bacteria in the mouth.

We also advise our patients to change their toothbrushes every three to four months. And if they can’t brush after eating, we suggest they rinse their mouths with water to remove debris.
