Causes and Treatments for Bad Breath

Are you finding yourself struggling with bad breath? Well, you’re not alone.

Many people are subject to bad breath – or halitosis – and are looking for a cure. Bad breath can not only make a person self-conscious, but it can also even affect personal life and relationships.

But to get to the cure – you must unveil the cause. Read on for more.

What may be causing bad breath

Bad breath is often a symptom of an underlying issue happening in the mouth or body. And while it sometimes may be due to oral hygiene that is not up to par, this is not always the case.

Here are some other potential causes:

  • Poor dental hygiene
    • If you are not brushing and flossing regularly, this can cause germs to fester and bad breath to be a result. It can also cause cavities to fester.
  • Dry mouth
    • If your mouth is dry due to an illness or medication, you could be subject to bad breath, as saliva serves to clean the mouth and when it decreases, bacteria can build.
  • Smoking or tobacco use
    • If you smoke cigarettes or use any tobacco product, you are at risk for bad breath.
  • Periodontal disease
    • Bad breath could be caused by periodontal disease, which bad breath can be an early symptom of.

Fortunately, there are solutions for bad breath. Solutions can be customized to each patient’s needs.

First, be sure you are seeing the dentist every six months for your professional cleaning and oral exam. This can go a long way in cleaning away germs and debris and detecting any potential issue that may be lurking.

Brush at least twice a day and floss daily to keep teeth and gums their healthiest and freshest. Be sure to brush for two minutes and change out your brush to a new one at least every three months.

Use a mouthwash that is antibacterial or one that contains cetylpyridinium chloride to keep germs at bay and freshen breath. Also, be sure to stay hydrated and try to quit tobacco use.

If you do these things and still suffer with bad breath, we encourage you to make an appointment. An oral exam can determine if there is another issue that needs to be addressed and treated.
