Can Exercise Really Improve Oral Health?

It is widely known that exercise has a wealth of benefits and can improve physical health as well as mental health. However, studies indicate that exercise can also improve oral health.

Research shows that regular exercise can increase periodontal health — including offering a 54 percent lower chance of developing periodontal disease, which is infection of the gums that can lead to damage of the tissues and bones that support your teeth.

Read on for more on this.

The link between exercise and dental health

According to the Journal of Periodontology, there is a link between BMI and dental health. Those who maintain an ideal weight range and get the recommended exercise were less likely to develop periodontal disease by a whopping 40 percent.

Further, the study showed that consuming a healthful diet that is low in sugar and high in vegetables, fruit and healthy fat also contributed to enhanced oral health.

For healthy adults, the Department of Health and Human Services indicates that getting 150 minutes of cardiovascular exercise per week, along with strength training twice weekly is optimal. The type of exercise does not matter so much as long as it works with your body and is something you enjoy — another key to staying committed.

However, take care while staying hydrated by avoiding acidic sports drinks. Choosing an electrolyte-infused water is a better choice for your teeth’s enamel.
